Sunday, March 29

March started quiet enough. I went off with the girls for a night away on the south coast to celebrate a birthday. We had booked rooms in a friend’s guesthouse and she had prepared us an evening meal of local dishes, which we had complimented with our own wines. Before dinner we took a walk around the small development to see where some of the rich and famous lived and then settled down to an evening of birthday celebrations. The next day we took a twenty minute hike to a great beach where we swam in the shallows, as the under currents were too strong to venture out any further.

We snacked on palm hearts and swam in a fresh water lagoon before the walk back where we drank a few pitons and a couple of rums before setting off home and then stopped again at a viewing point and had another beer to wash down our jerk chicken kebabs. Felt quite squiffy on the way home!

The following week was my own birthday so a dinner at the Rain Forest was in order and the buying of my Birthday tubs to go out side the front door. It all looks very colourful as you can see from the photos and so far Obie has managed to resist the temptation to chew them. He has quite a penchant for plastic tubs so perhaps these are just too big for him to take on.

Later in the month we joined some friends for a trip North to Turtle beach, where we picnicked and swam. As it is nearly egg laying season for turtles we did our bit for the environment and collected loads of washed up garbage to make a huge bonfire.

This is something that is done by anyone visiting the beach at this time of year but the problem is huge as the beach is about two miles long and the rubbish washed up on lies in a ten-foot strip. The poor turtles have to haul themselves up through the plastic bottles and old fishing nets before finding a safe place to dig a hole.

It's hot work even for Martins Pit Bull , who makes full use of the icy water filled cooler.

The next bit is about daring do..well daring for some and doing for others. A crowd of us went off zip lining in the rain forest, which by all accounts is great fun to do and a big adrenaline rush.

I have a fear of heights, hate speed and am not that keen on extra adrenaline rushing around my veins but decided to face my fears head on. There are eleven runs of varying lengths, heights and speed. I only managed five and took my chance to finish the whole ordeal when I spied an exit from the platform to the gardens. I tearfully consumed a bar of chocolate and gulp down a cold beer to restore my equilibrium!

There were only a few places you could leave as most of the runs end up in a large 100ft tree with no way down other then the zip line.

The others all loved it, even the fearless seven and nine year old boys. It didn't help that I injured my leg on the second run when I hurtled into the platform out of control and whacked my calf. It hurt like hell and is still causing me pain. Next time we go I shall take a good book with me and find a quiet spot in the beautiful gardens and contemplate life without thrills.

Fi has started at RAF Cranwell and is loving it.We have spoken several times on the phone and she seems to be laughing her way through even the most challenging times and has already made a name for herself as the cadet with the least coordination on the parade ground having followed the female family tradition of not knowing her left from her
